The right of suffrage is ensured in our constitution (SUFFRAGE: ARTICLE V Sec.1, 1987 constitution). This right of suffrage has been exercised again by those Filipinos who are registered voter last May 13, 2019 midterm election.

Now that the election is done and the result was made, diversity of opinions has rung out all throughout the country regarding the authenticity of the election result. Many have accepted the veracity of the outcome, but few have doubted the result.

In a democracy, the election is the fundamental mechanism for the society to decide and choose who shall govern them. The power to elect is innate within the people’s collective decision-making process. The fact that the voting population have exercised this liberty and have not disfranchised in the last election is a proof of legitimacy.

The game of election is all about the majority. The highest votes prevail. Indeed, the electorate has spoken last election who they wanted to lead the nation from the national level down to the local level. The will (voting preferences) of the majority must be respected by the minority for this is the tenet of election. As long as this basic rule of election is defended, the last election is fair and square.

The issue of irregularity in the election, as usual, has been raised again. The problem of transparency, vote buying, harassment and automation glitch are those major issues frequently asked to question the integrity of the last election. However, these issues must be substantiated to have a probable cause against the legitimacy of the last election. Without the back up of clear evidences, these issues shall remain an allegation.

The last election should also be seen through the lens of the work of God. Our Christian background as a nation is agreeable to the truth of the divine intervention in the just concluded midterm election.

The very core of the work of God centers on the establishment of the nation’s leadership. Prophet Daniel affirmed that “God in his wisdom and power, deposes kings and raises up others.” (Daniel 2:21). The divine plan is intertwined in the election process of the nation. Therefore, those who been elected must see their victory according to the sovereignty of God.

Apostle Paul also asserted that the formation of government is God’s work. He said that “there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (Romans 13:1). The establishment of authority by God’s plan should set the tone to acknowledge the outcome of the election.

Now that all has been perceived; here is the inference of the matter: The election is sacred for the people’s right of suffrage was exerted and the divine plan reigns.
